UX Case Study · Hybrid Board & Digital Game
Spaced Out is a hybrid board game developed as part of CCT419 by a team of five designers: Murat Diken, Rohin Ebadi, Scott Warren, Kylie Frendo, and Baran Alkandemir.
The project explores a core UX challenge: how could we take a game like Mario Party, which relies heavily on video game mechanics, and accomplish similar social chaos and strategic depth in a physical board game?
Each deck was designed as a system rather than content — influencing pacing, risk, and social interaction. Hover over the stacks below to explore how players engage with these mechanics.
These mobile minigames enhance physical play by introducing skill-based challenges and small moments of unpredictability. For example, players may dodge asteroids or play rock-paper-scissors during their turn.

The board communicates progression, risk, and reward through space design and iconography. During testing, we learned that clarity and onboarding were critical to reducing cognitive load.
